I think that's Haytham "memetic badassness" swaying people tbh. You're right, he didn't achieve his goal of finding and unlocking the Grand Temple, and his Templar branch was eradicated by his own son. Not the greatest legacy, especially when you compare it with that of Laureano Torres, who did a lot for Cuba, or Jacques de Molay, whose sacrifice transformed the Templar Order into the underground network we know it as, or François-Thomas Germain, who orchestrated the bloody French Revolution.
