I'm speculating that the Farm was one of the desert communes that has since been abandoned. Also, there is the "CallHome" thing above, which may be an assassin contact in the modern times (Though not in Desmond's current time, if you understand my convoluted explanation) telling Desmond that he should return to the Farm, or possibly his parents, though I find the former more likely.
