I am suspicious too. Mainly because of all the time spent with Birch later in life? Assassins don't tend to have Templars as close personal friends.

Interestingly the trailers have referenced him as 'a pirate trained by asssassins' not that he is an assassin. Whilst he may start off that way (and I hope he does) we might seem almost a pre ACI Altaïr sort of assassin, one begining to break The Creed from arrogance in his own skills.
