I'm thinking the 1st one. The 2nd isn't exactly, realistic, if you will. There is something however, the "Eye" is designed to see the future and such, why doesn't Desmond use it to see the future? (If he's alive and stuff.)

Or, since there are many theories Clay's conciousness protected Desmond from harm and bla bla bla, Clay is instead somewhat of an "interactive Eye", always warning Desmond not to do such choices or something.
