I agree, the original game had a sense of eeriness and mystery that the other two couldn't replicate. Also, I got mindfucked harder by the "flashing, bright yellow lights" ending of AC1 (especially Al Mualim cloning himself and bringing back my fallen targets and the Golden Globe) than I did by the ending of AC2, where some goddess revealed herself and told you everything.
