My theory: the ropes are guidewires (or something) that were put there to help the Assassins trigger the logfall trap against the first army who tried to besiege them (as we saw in the opening of AC1).

I don't think the trailer actually includes shots of the ropes. Even if it did, is it so impossible that someone replaced/maintained the ordinary, mundane hemp rope?
