As I said War, Assassin's Creed's story has been heavily based in Italy. :-P I personally think about it this way; they started Desmond's story in Italy, they should finish Desmond's story in Italy. It doesn't make much sense for him to go everywhere else himself, that's the point of having other Assassin teams around the world that keep in contact...
