It was not an illusion, devs have mentioned this a lot. Main good-guy characters tend to be difficult to kill with a simple stabbing, expecially in AC. Ezio's been stabbed so much, and survived even though the medical care back then was total crap, and people got infected and died a lot. Heck, when he was stabbed by the Orsi brother, he was in the hills. He was probably there for at least a day before he was dragged back. In Brotherhood, the impression was that a retrieval team of Assassins was on the way, and they would probably have medical gear.
