in brotherhood when u use the apple ezio life would go down to the point where ezio is on his knees, maybe when Desmond touched it it was slowly draining his life because as you slowly walk to kill lucy the apple flashes, i think Desmond coulnt handle the power of the apple as it was slowly draining him and he went into a coma
