In 2013, after the death of Desmond Miles in 2012, Abstergo decided that Subject 17's DNA genetic memories should not be waisted. They renamed the person's title from Subject 17, to Sample 17, and they immidiately hired a person to dive into the genetic memories of Edward James Kenway. Though they said they did it to make a trailer for Abstergo Entertainment, they changed opinion after they found out about the Observatory, through Edward Kenway's DNA. Sample 17 however, was in a hacking career at Abstergo's information, guided by John Standish. After the project's end, John was eventually discovered by Abstergo and killed. Sample 17 however, didn't get Abstergo's attention, so his hacking was continued, as he teamed up with the assassins, who had secretly infitrated Abstergo as workers there.
