As the sixth game in the Assassin's Creed series, and the first one available for next generation consoles, it makes a certain amount of sense that people have had voiced some concern about the potential quality of Ubisoft Montreal's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag in the months leading up to its release. While recent entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise have managed to maintain the series' grandiose spirit and high entertainment value, there's always the fear that the next one, given how quickly they're putting them out, could, like so many bandits off the plank, flop.

Based on critical reception so far, however, it doesn't look like Assassin's Creed IV is in any way a disappointment. With an engaging, swashbuckling story and a new gameplay mechanic that will have players taking to the high seas, Ubisoft Montreal has managed to craft yet another high quality gaming experience.

"While Black Flag feels very much like an Assassin's Creed game, its gameplay reminds me more of Sid Meier's Pirates! wrought in glorious 3D. As in that classic game, you are free to sail wherever your heart desires, and be as dastardly or as benign as you like. There's an incredible scope to what you can do in Black Flag, with a level of harmony between its component parts that encourages you to try it all, and a story that keeps you invested throughout the whole thing.
