Altair is the founder of the new assassin order, which meant the new recruits didnt have to lose their ring fingers in order to make space for the hidden blade- I'd say he's a good guy- he was villanised in the first AC game, as an arrogant, selfish member of the order, but he realises his mistakes and reforms. This is why he is the best assassin!
The stoic, solitary assassin is more appealing than a charming, flirty one I'll say.
