This article is about the temple of Zeus near Kranioi. For other uses, see Temple of Zeus.

The Temple of Zeus Chthonios was an ancient Greek temple dedicated to the god Zeus, located atop the hills of Kranioi in Kephallonia. By the 5th century BCE, naught remained of the temple but ruins, occupied by a pack of wolves.
In 431 BCE, the ruins were visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who eliminated the wolves and claimed the valuables in the area.[1]
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The epithet is the Greek word χθόνιος (khthónios), which means 'underground, subterranean'. English has borrowed the term as chthonian and chthonic, especially in reference to gods and spirits related to the Greek underworld.
