Talk:Ngô Đình Diệm
Diacritics[edit source]
While I personally prefer incorporating diacritics in all foreign names which should have them in my own day-to-day life—this includes even Chinese and Arabic names—English publications almost always drop them in non-European names, and I've noticed that we have a habit of being inconsistent about this. I still remember when Saladin was moved at one point to "Salāḥ ad-Dīn" under the rationale that we always use native names, but had we maintained diacritics in that name, it would have been inconsistent with even our rendering of Altaïr's name, which with full diacritics might be Alṭā'ir or Alṭāïr. Likewise, if we were to keep the tonal marks for Ngô Đình Diệm, why should we not do the same for Qin Shi Huang or Wang Yangming, which would be Qín Shǐ Huáng and Wáng Yángmíng respectively. I therefore recommend that we drop the tonal marks for Ngô Đình Diệm and cease our sporadic practice of creating new articles rendering names with full diacritics.
