is a peice of cloth pulled over the face a gas mask? 

Yes. A most basic and rudimentary form of one. You put a cloth over your face, you don't breathe in any sort of fumes directly. Unless you were expecting a 20th century mask with a visor and a filter. --Kainzorus Prime ⚜ ^{Walkie-talkie} 20:13, November 18, 2014 (UTC)
