Ezio's Threat to Selim

Did anyone else think that Ezio's reaction to his banishment from Constantinople was completely out of character?

I was very surprised when he raised his sword as if to strike Selim and Sofia had to restrain him. It doesn't seem like the sort of thing he would do. By the end of Revelations Ezio was supposed to be a very wise man and I thought this behaviour was just brutish? If Sofia had not been there? What would he have done? What was the point of it?
