History[edit | edit source]
In 1439, Johannes Gutenberg and his associates constructed the first wooden printing press in Strasbourg, after three years of work. The invention underwent several modifications in the following years and allowed for the mass production of books,[1] creating an environment favorable for the development of humanism.[2]
In the late 18th century, the de la Serre family spent a winter in Strasbourg. During their stay, they were snowed in for a week and the children, Arno Dorian and Élise de la Serre, left without entretainment since all books were in German, convinced the cook the house was haunted by a young Frankish prince.[3]
By the 1850s a trainline ran from Basel to Strasbourg, then from Strasbourg to Paris. Simeon Price took this trainline in his pursuit of Felice Orsini.[4]
