Snake-Hilted Sword

The Snake-Hilted Sword was a powerful basket-hilted sword with a serpentine hilt sold in Paris at the time of the French Revolution.

Description[edit | edit source]

As its name suggests, the Snake-Hilted Sword was a basket-hilted sword whose twisting bars were fashioned in the motif of a snake curling around the handle. In this manner, it was distinct from other basket-hilted swords whose hilts generally formed entire protective guards. Aside from this, the guard and pommel were also gilded, adding to its ornate appearance. More than just an elegant weapon, the Snake-Hilted sword was highly effective and ranked among the most powerful of broadswords of its era though it was surpassed by the schiavona. It had a keen, balanced blade inset by a fuller.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

During the French Revolution, the Snake-Hilted Sword was sold in the markets of Paris.[1]
