Shapur the Unforgiving

Shapur the Unforgiving (died c. 420s BCE) was a Persian mercenary who operated in Greece during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before Shapur got involved in the war, he was known for attacking rich merchants and robbing them of their possessions. One of his last kills was Samir the Nomad, one of the richest merchants in the region.[1]

While said conflict was ongoing, Shapur crossed paths with the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who killed the former after accepting a bounty contract. Afterwards, Kassandra claimed Shapur's signature dagger.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Shapur is a Persian male given name, meaning 'son of the king'. It was most notably carried by several Sasanian kings. As it was first attested in Middle Persian it’s use during the Peloponnesian War is anachronistic.[3]
