Selwood
Selwood was a forest close to the town, Chippenham, in Hamtunscire, England.
History[edit | edit source]
In 878, the Viking Geirmund Hel-hide and his Hel-hides made camp along with Guthrum's second-in command, Eskil. The next day, they all readied themselves for the battle at Chippenham but stopped when Rafn fell over due to his infected arm. Giving Birna Gormsdóttir command over the Hel-hides, Geirmund, Vetr, Eskil, Steinólfur, and Skjalgi stayed with Rafn to treat his ailment. Seeing no choice, they all helped amputate Rafn's arm and sterilize him. Leaving Vetr to take care of Rafn, Geirmund and his other allies left to join the battle.[1]
Vetr took care of Rafn and guarded him as he recuperated from his surgery. Later, Vetr almost killed an intruder, who happened to be Geirmund. Geirmund and his small company came back to check on them as Rafn seemed to be healing nicely. Geirmund offered his horse for Rafn and Vetr to ride together as they all raced to join the battle.[2]
