Scorpions in a tomb in 5th century BCE Greece

A scorpion is an arachnid of the order Scorpiones characterized by a pair of large pedipalps and a segmented tail ending in a venomous stinger.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Drawn to the darkness of tombs, scorpions often inhabited various tombs throughout Greece of antiquity. During the Peloponnesian War the misthios Kassandra saw them scurrying away into the crags as she approached them.[2]

Scorpions in 1st century BCE Egypt

During the 1st century BCE, scorpions were commonly found throughout Egypt.[3] Attacks were common as they could also be found in cities. In Soknopaiou Nesos, Bayek encountered Tuaa, a woman who had lost her husband to a scorpion's sting.[4]

Influence[edit | edit source]

In Greek mythology, the goddess Artemis sent a scorpion to kill the giant Orion, son of the god Poseidon, after Orion had harassed Artemis' follower, Opis. As a consequence, both Orion and the scorpion were turned into constellations.[5] A variant of this story says the scorpion was instead sent by Artemis' twin brother, Apollo. Nonetheless, the result was the same, and the two later became a part of the zodiac as Sagittarius and Scorpio.[6]

As scorpions are common in Egypt, they eventually found their way into their religion; Serqet is an Egyptian goddess often depicted with a scorpion on her crown, being the goddess of healing venomous stings and bites, among others. By 48 BCE, a cult revering the goddess had sprung up around the Nile Delta, using a stylized scorpion as their insignia.[7]

Bayek encountered several giant scorpions when in a simulation of Aaru. Unlike their counterparts in the 'waking world', these giants attacked him on sight. Killing these yielded star shards and their pincers as animal goods.[8]
