Sadhbh was an Irish noblewoman who married Bárid mac Ímair, the son of Viking leader Ímar, the Norse-Gaelic King of Dublin. The two had a son named Sichfrith.

In the 870s, Sadhbh travelled with Bárid's mother Ségdae from Ireland on a pilgrimage to southern Europe to seek a potential cure for his mother's illness.[1] At some point, they arrived in Caldarez near the border of southern Francia, hoping that the waters from the Pyrenees would improve her health. When Bárid's mother's health had improved, Sadhbh wrote a letter back to Bárid in Dublin to report the news. In the letter, Sadhbh also urged Bárid to have patience with Sichfrith.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The name Sadhbh is an Irish femine personal name, derived from the Proto-Celtic word *sŭādŭā '(the) sweet and lovely (lady)'. It was the name of the mother of the legendary poet and warrior Oisín, who was the son of the Irish mythical hero Finn McCool.[3]
