Richard Croke (c. 1489–1558) was an English classical scholar[1] and a disciple of Desiderius Erasmus.[2]
Biography[edit | edit source]
In early 1519, Croke's friend Thomas More was arrested and taken to the Tower of London. Croke then began to investigate the matter, attempting to learn which building inside the prison he was being kept in.[3] On May of that year, after a lecture in Peterhouse, Cambridge, Croke was approached by a member of the British Brotherhood of Assassins who had been tasked with locating and freeing More.[2] Croke relayed the findings of his investigation to the Assassin, mentioning that his friend was being kept somewhere between Martin Tower and Well Tower.[3]
