Repton Abbey was an Anglo-Saxon abbey, which later became overrun by the Sons of Ragnar, in Repton, Ledecestrescire.

History[edit | edit source]

Throughout the 8th and 9th century, Mercian kings were buried underneath Repton Abbey, such as Kings Wiglaf and Æthelbald, after the rules.[1]

In 873, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir traveled and entered into the abbey, which was used as a torturous interrogation chamber by Ivarr the Boneless. Upon entering, Eivor witnessed Ivarr questioning a "spy" from King Burgred of Mercia before ultimately killing him. Ivarr welcomed the shieldmaiden as he offered to show her the current situation within Repton.[2] On her own time, Eivor also probed the abbey and found an underground passage to the tomb of the past kings. There, Eivor collected a fragment of the saga, Rigsogur, about the Viking Rig Reidarasson.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Historically, the abbey itself was abandoned after the Great Heathen Army invaded and overrun the town.[3]
