Brother Quiescis was a monk who lived in the city of Canterbury in Kent, England. Taking a strict vow of silence, he was served by his acolyte Alwin, who translated what he had said through monastic signs.
In the 870s, while outside the Canterbury Barracks, Quiescis and Alwin encountered the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir during her time in the city. When asked whether they were up for a flyting session, Alwin remarked that he would flyt in Quiescis's place, serving as his interpreter for his words. Eivor accepted and went on to win the challenging, winning the wager she had placed.[1]
