Pholos was a wise centaur and a friend of the hero Herakles in Greek mythology.
In the legends, Pholos resided in a forest in Elis. He met Herakles during the latter's hunt for the Erymanthian Boar as part of his Twelve Labours. Pholos invited Herakles to his home and opened a jar of wine, The fragrant odor drove the nearby centaurs mad and attracted them to his location. Herakles fought and killed all the centaurs, including Pholos.[1]
