Merton (died c. 873) was a Mercian noble who served as ealdorman of Sciropescire during the late 9th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Under the rule of King Ceolwulf, Merton worked with the allied Sons of Ragnar to fight the invading Britons led by King Rhodri the Great. Merton died in one of the battles against the Britons,[1] and his thegns, including Orlaf, Eadric, and Baeldaeg, were captured and held at the Dhustone Quarry.[2]
Following his death and the capture of Rhodri's brother Gwriad by Ivarr the Boneless, Merton was replaced by Bishop Deorlaf at the peace talks between the Britons and the Mercian-Viking coaltion.[1]
