Luis de Almeida (1525 – 1583) was a Portuguese merchant, surgeon, and Jesuit missionary active in Japan. Almeida first traveled to Japan in 1552, in connection to the silk trade with China. After three years in the country, he decided to become a Jesuit and donated all his wealth to the church. Almeida was instrumental in establishing a hospital and an orphanage in Funai,[1] and is credited with introducing European medicine to Japan.[2]
