Ancient Scandinavia was not all ice and snow; it included green, lush landscapes like these Norwegian islands. In fact, its soil was quite fertile along the coast and in the South, and could yield a generous crop. However, Scandinavian harvests did pale in comparison to those in the Frankish or Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, adding incentive for the invasion and settlement of those lands.
