Learnings: The Fyrd, or Militia

According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Alfred divided his army in two; half the men were at home and half were on duty. Those on duty were expected to come if called to defend the burh or to join the king and his lords in battle against their enemies.

Not all militiamen in the fyrd were necessarily skilled warriors. Wealthier fyrds could offer better equipment and weapons to their defenders, and wealthier men would have more free time to train for war. Poorer freemen who spent most of their hours working would have had fewer opportunities to practice their combat skills.

The spear was one of the most common weapons used by militiamen. An iron spearhead could inflict terrible wounds from a distance, a great tactical advantage.
