Judith

Judith was a Jewish widow from Bethulia present in the Book of Judith, known for beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes to protect her hometown from his destruction.

During the Renaissance, painters chose to recreate and immortalize her in several works of art. Of these, two paintings by the Italian Sandro Botticelli, The Return of Judith to Bethulia (1470) and The Discovery of the Murder of Holofernes (c. 1472) hung in the Torre Grossa.
