John Russell, 1st Earl Russell (1792 – 1878) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1846 to 1852 and again from 1865 to 1866.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
On 22 January 1866, John received a royal correspondence from Queen Victoria informing him that, contrary to his apprehensions, she could attend Parliment's reopening accompanied by her daughter "Alberta". The Queen expressed reluctance and resentment toward the public's desire to witness her alone in mourning following her husband Prince Consort Albert's recent death, describing it as an ordeal akin to an execution. Despite her shaken nerves and deep sorrow, she agreed to fulfill the obligation but bemoaned the lack of sensitivity from those insisting on her presence.[2]
