Hystaspes was the second son of the Persian king Xerxes I. When his father was assassinated by Darius, Hystaspes' younger brother Artaxerxes I ascended the throne.

Hystaspes grew jealous of his brother and plotted to kill him, hiring Darius, his father's killer, to kill him with poison. When the attempt failed, his brother fled to Megara, Greece. In his absence, Hystaspes claimed the throne. Hystaspes would continue to send executioners and assassins to make attempts on his life.[1]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Historically, Hystaspes never ascended the throne and is actually thought to have been assassinated on orders from Artaxerxes.
