History[edit | edit source]
The Second Anglo–Ashanti War, took place in the region from 1863 to 1864.[1] Louis Prescott served as a colonel for the 11th Regiment of Foot in a mission that ended in ambush along the Pra River. Jonas Hassett and Samuel Frye served under him in the regiment.[2] Further conflicts erupted across the region up until 1896, after which the Ashanti controlled territory was further annexed into the Gold Coast colony.[3]
During the 19th century, the region was advertised as holiday destination for people from the United Kingdom wishing to visit the colonies of the British Empire. The Gold Coast were advertised as being "an African treasure".[4]
