Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered to the north by Spain.
History[edit | edit source]
In the early 18th century, Gibraltar's ports were bustling,[1] crowded by merchants and sailors from different countries. One of the most sought-after items was high-quality wine, which the pirate Edward Kenway supplied to the city through his fleet.[2] He also traded tobacco with the Spanish and rice with the British residing in the region.[1]
By 1754, the Templar and British Army general Edward Braddock served as the acting Governor of Gibraltar before he was sent to the British colonies in America at the onset of the French and Indian War.[3] During the war, the Colonial Templar Shay Cormac sent spies to Gibraltar to aid the British Empire in their occupation, keeping tabs on the Spanish to ensure they respected their treaties.[4] Seeing the territory as a great infiltration point for Templar spies in Spain, Portugal, and North Africa, Shay later sent additional spies.[5]
During the 19th century, Gibraltar was advertised as a holiday destination for people from the United Kingdom wishing to visit the colonies of the British Empire. The colony was advertised as being "at the crossroads of the civilised world and the West".[6]
