Gerontospilios was a cave in Zeus' Playground in Messara, Greece. It was used by the Followers of Ares as a base and had two entrances.
During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra explored the place, killed the followers, freed their prisoners and looted the valuables within.[1]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
The cave of Gerontospilios in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is based on a cave on Crete which is a place of many archaeological findings. It also played a role in the Cretan revolution against the Turks, in 1824, where 370 unarmed villagers were suffocated due to the Turks sealing the entrance and making fires within, using up all oxygen within.[2]
