The Franciscans are a group of Christian religious orders founded by Saint Francis of Assisi.[1] Their members take on a vow of poverty, as did Saint Francis, following the steps of Jesus Christ according to their reading of the bible.[2][3]

The Franciscans were responsible for the basilicas of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice, Santa Croce in Florence and the Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asis in Havana.

History[edit | edit source]

During his papacy, Clement IV requested English philosopher and Franciscan friar Roger Bacon to write a summary of his achievements, which became known as the Opus Majus.[4]

In 1322, Pope John XXII declared the Franciscans' vow of poverty to be illegal, claiming that Jesus Christ had owned property and encouraged his followers to do the same. This meant that the Franciscans were forced to collect money and land which would go to the Pope.[2][3]

In 1614, King Louis XIII of France requested navigator Samuel de Champlain to bring a number of Franciscan monks (known as the Récollets) to Canada to further life in the newly established French colony. Amongst the friars were Father Denys Jamet, Father Jean Dolbeau, Father Joseph Le Caron, Brother Pacifique Duplessis and Brother Nicolas Viel.[5]
