The French Republic, historiographically the First French Republic, was the first state founded with the overthrow of the French monarchy in 1792 during the French Revolution.

Synonymous with the French revolutionary nation, the French Republic lasted for the duration of the revolution, enduring such violent events as the the Reign of Terror, before it was finally dissolved by Napoleon Bonaparte with his declaration of the First French Empire in 1804.
