Elais was a figure in Greek myths, said to be one of the daughters of the founder and king of Delos, Anios.

According to the stories, the god Dionysos granted Elais the ability to make oil spring from the ground.[1]

Influence[edit | edit source]

By the time of the Peloponnesian War, a farm in the Kynthos Hills of Delos was dedicated to Elais, or indeed to have belonged to her. During the Peloponnesian War, however, it served as the hiding place of an Athenian strategos Neokles, whom the Spartan polemarch Thaletas sent the misthios Kassandra to hunt down.[2]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Elais' name is derived from Ancient Greek word Ἐλαΐς, which means 'seed'. Elais was revered as the goddess of oil.
