Derelict Shrine of Camulus

The Derelict Shrine of Camulus was a former Romano-British shrine dedicated to Camulus, a Celtic deity identified with Mars in Roman mythology. Located in the heart of Oxfordshire, the shrine was largely unattended and had decayed by the Anglo-Saxon period.

History[edit | edit source]

Circa 874, the shrine was used as a forward camp by Geadric and his men in preparation for an assault on the castle of Cyne Belle, where his rival Eadwyn was based. The Viking Eivor Varinsdottir travelled there to meet Geadric after assisting his forces in weakening Eadwyn's influence over the shire.[1]
