The Italian ruling classes of the Renaissance, both the nobility and bourgeoisie, were male-dominated, and the political and ruling responsibilities were normally restricted to men. However, the social hierarchy was also a question of lineages and dynasties. Women belonging to prominent families could play an influential role in terms of sociability and alliance building and sometimes in politics, though mostly from behind the scenes. Women also could play a role in the administration of the properties and businesses of the family.
