Bookkeeping is an old practice of sailors. Known as manifests, these ship's books were used to record any noteworthy information or event occurring onboard. They were notably used on merchant ships to establish lists of merchandise and to justify any losses or damage. Officers of Navy ships used them to explain their decisions, in case of investigation or martial court. In any case, these books now offer valuable information over centuries for historians, in numerous different areas including climate change!
