Nikolaï was not interested in cleaning his country of Imperialism, but, after seeing a picture of Nicholas II wielding the very Staff of Eden he thought was destroyed, Nikolaï infiltrated the Imperial palace and massacred the Tsar's staff. When he found Nicholas II, he did not kill him, only asking for the Staff instead. As he had thought, it was a mere replica that held no power.
