Database: Potassium/Water Reaction

Until the 18th century, no distinction had been made between potassium and sodium. Only experiments of Humphry Davy, following from Lavoisier, was elemental potassium finally isolated. When combined with water, potassium forms potassium hydroxide, resulting in a violet, explosive reaction.
