Carracks were multi-masted ships developed in the 15th century by the Portuguese to develop their trade routes in the Atlantic Ocean. Explorers generally preferred the lighter caravels to travel far with maneuverability and speed, but the needs to transport large amount of product from the Orient to Europe needed larger ships to improve the profitability of such long and perilous travels.
