Estrid was a Frankish lady of noble birth who was married at a young age to Birstan, Ealdorman of Essexe, by her father. Though she was by all accounts witty, beautiful, and intelligent, her diaries show Birstan was more interested in spending time with his huntinghounds than his wife.
