Database: Castillo San Salvador de la Punta

Part of a system of fortifications built to protect Havana Bay from incursions by French corsairs, the fortress was begun in 1590 and took decades to complete. The fortress is close enough to the nearby Castillo Morro to permit a heavy iron chain to be extended between them that could be tightened to block incursions by enemy ships.
