Castel dell'Ovo, also known as the Egg Castle, is a castle and an important landmark located on an islet in the Bay of Naples, Italy.
Its name comes from a legend about the Roman poet Virgil who, in the Middle Ages, was regarded as a powerful sorcerer and was said to have placed an egg in the castle's fortifications to make them stronger.[1]
The original edifice was a fortified villa where the last Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustus, was exiled in 476.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
During the Renaissance, a drydock was located near the castle, which housed Cesare Borgia's naval cannon until 1502, when the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze destroyed the only prototype of the vehicle.[2]
