Cartimandua
Cartimandua (fl. 1st century CE) was a Briton chieftain of the Brigantes tribe and wife to Venutius.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Cartimandua did not oppose the Roman incursions into Britain, with her husband originally following her lead. However, when the Britonnic warrior Caratacus went to the Brigantes for sanctuary, Cartimandua betrayed him and delivered Caratacus to the Romans against Venutius' counsel.[1][2]
Venutius opposed her actions and Cartimandua then took his standard-bearer Vellocatus as her lover. Venutius turned on her Roman patrons and soon became one of Rome's fiercest opponents, waging war across northern England and into Wales for years. Eventually, Venutius took complete command of the Brigantes,[1] with Cartimandua disappearing from the records.[3]
