The Buttonwood Agreement is the founding document of what is now the New York Stock Exchange. Signed in 1792 under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street, the simple contract bound 24 local merchants in their agreement to trade only with one another for a 0.25% commission on whatever they traded.[1] These merchants would keep meeting under the tree to trade securities after the agreement had been signed.[2]
